János Szentágothai (originally János Schimert) was born on the 31st October, 1912 in Budapest, Hungary

The building of the Department of Anatomy, Semmelweis University (Budapest)

Szentagothai was invited to become the head of 1st Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology at the Semmelweis University Medical School, Budapest in 1963, a position held until 1977 when he was elected President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Szentagothai not only continued the traditions of the great ancestors (like G. Mihálkovics, M. von Lenhossék, F. Kiss), but reinforced the Department as one of the leading schools of brain research in Hungary, by continuously supporting the ever growing younger generations. Many of his successors and former disciples are still active participants and leading figures in neuroscience chairs and institutions in Hungary and elsewhere. Several academic „sons” and „grandsons” of his are also board members of the Hungarian Neuroscience Society (HNS).
